GReader-Checker: A Safari 5 Extension for Google Reader

Current Version: 1.02

The GReader-Checker extension for Safari 5 is based off of the work of both Victor Adrée and Alejandro JL. I combined both of their codes and implemented my own icons and settings to give the best user experience when using the extension. I based my icons off of Matt Brett’s RSS feed icon.

What GReader-Checker does:
- Updates a toolbar icon when there is a new feed item in Google Reader.
- This updates you on your total unread count.
- NEW in v1.01: Switches to already open Google Reader tab or creates a new one if there is not one open.
- NEW in v1.02: Open Google Reader in current tab if on blank or Top Sites. Special thanks to Nicholas Helke (@nHenke on Twitter) for his patch.

What GReader-Checker might do in the future:
- Allow you to pick which feeds you want to be updated.
- Enter a custom update time

Why should you use GReader-Checker?
- It works
- It’s pretty
- It has more options than others out there

Thank you for the very useful Safari plugin GReader-Checker.

I would like to use this plugin but there is a problem that I am having with it.

When I use Google Reader with the regular http:// (without the ‘s’ I get many errors. However when I use https:// everything works fine. As per the Google Reader forums, this is a known issue and work around for many people receiving errors.

Perhaps there is a way to have the plug lead to the secure reader page either as the default or as a preference.

Thank you for your assistance.

Just started using Google Reader. This little plugin will be a welcome addition to my browser. Now I won’t obsessively check GR all the time!

Thanks!

John K.
